A lifetime of war weathers soldiers until they can barely focus on themselves, only their dedication to the mission. Special Forces Captain Bryan Howe, is no different. In his debut military science fiction novel The Oppressed, author Matt Thomas sends Howe and his team of twelve weathered warriors through the emotional exhaustion of constant firefights, precarious allies, and a fractured populace to free Earth from an alien aggressor. Kirkus Reviews calls it “[a] well-written, fiery sci-fi tale…” where “Thomas has thought through the mindsets of the victors and vanquished, skillfully shading in the psychologies of the opposing forces before small feints and ambushes bloom into full-scale war.”
“Science Fiction gives veterans a canvas to discuss the emotional toll of their experiences.” Says Thomas. “They can’t always talk about it, but they can write about it. The alien experience of war becomes more familiar when placed in the world of speculative fiction.”
Thomas served as an Army lawyer in Iraq and Afghanistan. He is one of a growing number of veterans turning to writing as a way to discuss veteran issues. The years he spent having US Army Special Forces Green Berets as clients were the most challenging and most rewarding experience of his career, military or civilian. As a legal adviser to a Special Operations Task Force, he saw firsthand the intensity and dedication of America’s elite as they fought in the most fiercely contested regions of Afghanistan.
Thomas turns these experiences into the brutal world of The Oppressed. An alien force seized Earth more than two decades before the novel opens. Howe’s team becomes the first to return, laying the foundation for re-invasion. The humans on Earth have become slaves. Their rage against those who left them behind, however, matches their anger towards their overseers. Alone on what had been his home planet, Howe must forge alliances between distrustful factions to achieve the only conceivable goal: liberate Earth.
